# What you need to run Emplio yourself

> Self-hosted Emplio needs Docker with Compose, about 4 GB of memory plus 2 GB per person working at once, an OpenRouter key, and ports 80 and 443 on a server.

Check these before you install. Emplio runs everything in Docker, so the machine needs little else.

| What | Why |
| - | - |
| Docker with Compose | Emplio and its parts run as containers. Get it at [docs.docker.com](https://docs.docker.com/get-docker/). On a Linux server the installer can add it. |
| At least 4 GB of memory | For Emplio, its database and its file history. |
| 2 GB more per person working at once | Each person gets their own computer and browser, each limited to 2 GB and 2 CPUs by default. |
| An [OpenRouter](https://openrouter.ai/keys) key | Emplio's AI models, billed to your own account. |
| Ports 80 and 443 open | Only on a server with its own web address, for HTTPS. |
| A 64-bit Intel or ARM machine | The ready-made images are built for both. |

## Your user and Docker

On Linux, your user needs access to Docker. If the installer says you don't have it yet, run this, then log out and back in:

```bash theme={null}
sudo usermod -aG docker $USER
```

## Memory limits

The 2 GB and 2 CPU limits apply to each computer and each browser. You can change them with `COMPUTER_MEMORY` and `COMPUTER_CPUS` in `.env`. See [Configuration](https://docs.emplio.app/self-host/configuration.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> A person's computer goes to sleep about 15 minutes after its last command and frees its memory. Its files stay.
